Number of Jewish Settlers in Gaza Has Risen Despite Withdrawal Plan
JERUSALEM -- The number of Jewish settlers in the Gaza Strip has grown by 9 percent in the past year, despite Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's plan to evacuate them, government figures showed on Sunday.
The settlers' leaders have vowed to move more people into the area to help them resist the withdrawal, planned for later this year. The latest Israeli population survey released by the Interior Ministry shows a persistent rise in Israelis moving to lands occupied since the 1967 Middle East War, despite the violence of a four-year-old Palestinian uprising.
